Mario Serrano, se graduó como ingeniero agrónomo por la Universidad Autónoma Agraria “Antonio Narro”, México. Posteriormente, él realizó estudios de Maestría y Doctorado en el Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Politécnico Nacional, Campus Irapuato (CINVESTAV-Irapuato) bajo la dirección de Plinio Guzmán. Del 2004 al 2008 fue becario de la Sociedad Max-Planck, para realizar estudios de Postdoctorado en el grupo de Paul Schulze-Lefert, en el Max-Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Colonia, Alemania. Posteriormente, del 2008 al 2014, fue contratado como Junior group leader en la Universidad de Fribourg, Suiza, en grupo de Jean-Pierre Métraux. Es Investigador Titular B definitivo en el Centro de Ciencias Genómicas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Campus Morelos y forma parte del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (nivel 2).
Su línea de investigación es la caracterización de la inmunidad innata al hongo necrótrofo Botrytis cinerea (moho gris), que se considera el segundo hongo fitopatógeno más dañino para la agricultura. Las primeras interacciones entre las plantas y los hongos tienen lugar en la epidermis, donde la planta no solo tiene la primera barrera física, que incluye la cutícula en los órganos aéreos, sino es donde los organismos se reconocen mutua y potencialmente la inmunidad innata vegetal es inducida. Nuestro objetivo es el identificar y caracterizar los elementos moleculares que vinculan cambios en la cutícula y la inducción de la inmunidad innata de las plantas, utilizamos el modelo de interacción Arabidopsis thaliana–Botrytis cinerea y las herramientas de genética tradicional y genómica química. Así mismo, estamos interesados en identificar y caracterizar molecularmente bioestimulantes provenientes del microbioma de animales y plantas, que ayuden a limitar el daño causado por este fitopatógeno.
