Abstract: 

Currently, the use of anti-uenorns is the pnly auailable treattnent for enrlenomations

caused by po%sonous anirnals, narnely snake, ssorplon, spider; tick,

and jellyfish. Anti-uenorns are generally produced in big anl:mals, rnostly in

liorses. A large percentage of the population in some regions is allergic to horse

proteins. Seueral anirnals are known to be resistant to snakebites, and the

anti-hemorrhagic and anti-lethal cornponents haue been isolated from sera of

opossurn, ,rnongoose, rneerhat, and hedgehog, as uiell asfrom poiso.nous and nonpoisonous

snahes. Letlial toxin neutralizingfactot. (LTNF) zuias isolated in pwrity

from opossurn (D. virginiana) serurn by high-pressure liquid chrornatography.The rnolecular weiglit of LTNF is 63 3 a , and it does not form precipitates

witli. uenorns or toxins by k m u n e diffusion test. Death due to intraperitoneal

injection of a predetermined lethal dose of uenorn from rnajor fam%lies of snakes

(Crotalidae, Elapidae, Viperidae, and Hydrophdae) is preuented in mice by

subsequent intraperitoneal inoculation of LThE Furthermore, LTWneutralizes

the lethality ofscorpion and bee uenurns and toxi.ns frorn uarious animal, plant,

and hacterial sources. Ttvus, natural LTNF frwn opossurn serurn has potential

as a uniuersal therapy for enueno~mations and other toxin exposure caused by

anirnals, plants, and bacteria.
