Isabel María López Lara estudió biología en la Universidad de Granada, en Granada (España). Obtuvo su título de doctora en 1992 por la Universidad de Granada con el trabajo “Estudio genético y bioquímico de los polisacáridos de superficie de Rhizobium sp GRH2″ realizado en la Estación Experimental del Zaidín (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) bajo la supervisión de Nicolás Toro García. De 1993 a 1995 realizó estudios postdoctorales con Herman P. Spaink en el “Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences” en Leiden (Países Bajos) estudiando la base molecular de la interacción Rhizobium-legumionosa Posteriormente, con una beca EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization), realizó estudios postdoctorales con Otto Geiger en el Departamento de Biotecnología de la Universidad Técnica de Berlín (Alemania) en donde estudió biosíntesis de lípidos en rizobios. En octubre de 1999 se integró como investigadora al entonces Centro de Investigación sobre Fijación de Nitrógeno (CIFN) de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Su investigación se enfoca en estudiar el metabolismo de ácidos grasos en bacterias, incluyendo su biosíntesis, modificaciones de los mismos para dar lugar a moléculas señal y su transferencia a otras moléculas durante la formación de lípidos de membrana. Es Investigador titular B, investigador nacional nivel II y pertenece al PRIDE con el nivel C. Fue editor asociado de la revista Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions de Estados Unidos en el periodo 2004-2006.
