David René Romero Camarena

Academic history

David Romero got a BSc in Basic Biomedical Research (1983) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) with a thesis, directed by Fernando Bastarrachea, on the in vivo cloning of mutations affecting the glnALG operon in Escherichia coli. His MSc thesis (UNAM, 1986), directed by Guillermo Dávila, was focused on molecular genetics of nitrogen metabolism in Neurospora crassa, identifying the structural gene for GOGAT in this organism. He also received a PhD in Basic Biomedical Research (UNAM, 1991), working with Guillermo Dávila, on the identification of mechanisms causing the formation of genome rearrangements in Rhizobium etli. This work was distinguished with the Weizmann Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis in Natural Sciences (1991), given by the Mexican Academy of Sciences and the Association of Friends of the Weizmann Institute. Since 1986 he is a member of the academic staff of the Nitrogen Fixation Research Center (CIFN), which in 2004 became the Center for Genomic Sciences (CCG).
He currently is a Professor in Molecular Genetics (Investigador Titular C) and Responsible of the Program on Genome Engineering at the Center for Genomic Sciences (CCG) at the UNAM, Campus Morelos, in Cuernavaca, México. He is a founding member of both CIFN and CCG.
His work is devoted to the understanding of the role of homologous and site-specific recombination, as well as gene conversion, in shaping the genome structure of Rhizobium, and the application of this knowledge to develop strategies for genome engineering of this organism. He has also worked on plasmid organization in Rhizobium and in the identification of different genes involved in symbiosis. Ongoing projects include “Relative role of homologous recombination and non-homologous end joining in the repair of double-strand breaks in the Rhizobium genome”, “Generation of tools for genome engineering in Rhizobium“, focused on CRISPR-Cas, and “Function of two novel essential genes in Rhizobium“.
As a Professor, he has taught over 90 courses, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has directed the theses of five undergraduate students, one at the MSc and nine at the PhD level. He has also advised three posdoctoral researchers.
Regarding services to the academic community of the Center, he has been Academic Coordinator of the Graduate Program (1988-1993; 1998-2000), Academic Secretary (2001-2003), Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program in Genomic Sciences (2003-2007) and Director of the CCG (2009-2017). At the School of Sciences of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, he was Academic Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1996-1997).
David Romero is a member of several scientific societies, including the Mexican Academy of Sciences, Morelos Academy of Sciences, Mexican Society of Biochemistry, Mexican Association of Microbiology, National Society for Biological Nitrogen Fixation (México), Mexican Society of Genomic Sciences, International Society for Plasmid Biology and the American Society for Microbiology. In these, he has been President of the National Society for Biological Nitrogen Fixation (1991-1995), member of the Directive Committee of the Mexican Association of Microbiology (2003-2005), Treasurer of the Mexican Society of Genomic Sciences (2004-2007), Secretary of the International Society for Plasmid Biology (2008-2010), President of the Morelos Academy of Sciences (2015-2018) and Vicepresident (2017-2019) and President Elect (2019-2021) of the Mexican Society of Biochemistry.
